The geopolitical landscape is evolving. The relationship between the two old cold war foes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the US and Russia is deteriorating. Not quite at the cold war stage yet,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but relations are getting frosty.

The bill was named after Russian attorney, Sergei Magnitsky, who died in a Russian jail whilst trying to expose what he described as a 'large-scale systematic theft' from the Russian state which was sanctioned and carried out by Russian officials.
The Russians responded by stopping US families adopting Russian orphans. President Putin has also instructed Russian businessmen to return their assets to Russia. As well as looking to minimize the effects of the Magnitsky Bill which allows the US to freeze assets held in America, Putin is also likely looking to minimize the effects on Russia as international relationships continue to deteriorate.
According to the US,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the Magnitsky affair is representative of the growing human rights abuses in Russia and has prompted a number of accusations and concerns being raised by politicians and human rights groups.

Once the biggest importer of natural gas, the US is now not only self-sufficient but it is also starting to export as well. As the world's largest exporter,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], this change has impacted Russia and the energy market as a whole. The interest in fracking in Europe,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which is Russia's biggest gas export market,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], has prompted accusations that Russia is funding activists to oppose the practice which has now been banned in France and Bulgaria with moratoriums announced in several other areas.
Changes in the energy market are having a marked impact on the geopolitical landscape. As Europe looks to diversify their gas source,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], following two cuts in supply to Ukraine by Russia which had a knock to effect to Europe, Russia is responding by developing new markets in Asia. Relations between Ukraine and Russia are also growing tenser as Russia responds to Ukraine's attempts to diversify its own energy supplies away from Russia. Russia has sent a clear message to the Ukraine that it will fight its attempts to be less dependent on it using both energy supplies and economics to pressure the country.
